Following the closure of several local theaters after the pandemic, remaining businesses are working to adapt to changes in customer habits and avoid “deep programmatic cuts.” Structural challenges have caused businesses to reduce programming, introduce emergency fundraising efforts or shut down altogether.
This past week, an auction was launched to sell off what was left of Bay Area Children’s Theatre. It is part of the bankruptcy proceeding most of the theaters that folded managed to do it before the court needed to get involved, but not BACT.
The pandemic-era economic challenges to the theater business apparently also apply to children’s theater, as the Bay Area Children’s Theatre announced its sudden closure this week after nearly 20 years of performances.
