Lao Christian Pastor Detained since 2020 Finally Released 04/11/2021 Laos (International Christian Concern) – A Lao pastor who was arrested by the authorities after he refused to cease worship early last year was finally released. According to Radio Free Asia, an official of the provincial prosecutor’s office told RFA that Pastor Sithon Thippavong, 35, was released on April 9 after being convicted by the Provincial People’s Court on April 6 on charges of “disrupting unity” and “creating disorder.” “He was sentenced to one year and two months in jail and fined a total of four million kip [U.S. $426], with two million kip paid for each charge,” the official who asked for anonymity said. ....
VIENTIANE, April 10 (Vientiane Times/ANN): The World Food Programme (WFP) has committed US$1 million to the Ministry of Health for the provision of meals to returning migrant labourers temporarily housed in quarantine centres in Vientiane, Bokeo, Savannakhet, Champassak and Xayaboury provinces. Through US$1 million in multilateral donations, WFP and implementing partners will provide food for about 100 additional days, benefiting an estimated 10,000 people. Returning migrant workers staying in state-run quarantine centres will receive three nutritious meals a day, which helps prevent illness and maintains their health and wellbeing, while reducing the financial burden on returning migrants and their families. A Memorandum of Understanding on the project had been signed by WFP Country Director and Representative, Jan Delbaere, and Minister of Health, Dr Bounfeng Phoummalaisith. ....
