Photoacoustic tomography is a promising technique for noninvasive medical imaging of biological tissues. In a recent review, researchers focus on the optical component of quantitative photoacoustic tomography, where the distributions of the optical parameters are estimated from the initial pressure. The review discusses how light propagation in a tissue is modelled, the numerical solution methodologies of the image reconstruction, and the challenges that must be addressed for real-world applications.
