21 December 2020 15:45 GMT Synaptics has announced the Katana Edge AI platform, addressing a growing industry gap for solutions that enable battery-powered devices for consumer and industrial IoT markets. The platform combines Synaptics’ proven low power SoC architecture with energy-efficient AI software, enabled by a partnership with Eta Compute. The Katana solution is optimized for a wide range of ultra-low power use cases in edge devices for office buildings, retail, factories, farms and smart homes. Typical applications include people or object recognition and counting, visual, voice or sound detection, asset or inventory tracking and environmental sensing. Katana features a multi-core processor architecture optimized for ultra-low-power and low latency voice, audio and vision applications. Westlake Village tech firm Eta Compute Inc. has raised $12.5 million in a Series C round led by Synaptics Inc. in San Jose, the company announced Tuesday. Eta, founded in 2015, makes artificial intelligence systems for use in spatial sensors. It specializes in energy efficient “edge AI,” or when machine learning algorithms process data collected by a hardware device without being connected to the internet. This is applied in motion and environmental sensing and image and audio analytics. Along with the investment from Synaptics, Eta has entered a co-development and marketing partnership with the company, which makes human interface products such as touchpads for laptops and touch and voice technology for smart home devices and smart cars. ....
