A nursery apprentice accused of sex assaults on young children was left dumbstruck when he was confront with an allegation of raping a three-year-old child, a jury heard yesterday.
Lindsay Nelson, manager and safeguarding lead at the nursery, said she immediately suspended Jayden McCarthy who was 16 years old at the time of the alleged offences in July 2019.
She said McCarthy, now 18, was mistakenly told about the rape allegation by another member of staff before she spoke to him.
Miss Nelson, who was a director of the Jack and Jill nursery in Torquay, Devon, along with her parents Pam and John, told the jury at Exeter Crown Court: He appeared very shocked at the allegation that had been posed to him.
