Many of us have memories of grandparents who lived nearby or even in our homes.
It was a win-win for the family: Working parents benefited from a built-in babysitter and someone to help with the cooking and cleaning. And for the children, there was continuity of a family member at home and, if we were especially lucky, someone to spoil us with afternoon treats.
