The School District of Maple will no longer require students to quarantine if they come into close contact at school with someone who tests positive for COVID-19. The Maple School Board voted unanimously for the move at a special board meeting Wednesday, May 12.
The decision only affects students who come into close contact during school or at a school-related activity, including sports. If the close contact occurred outside of school, such as through a family member or sleepover, students would be required to quarantine. Students with no symptoms would be allowed to return to school after eight days if they test negative for the virus on days 5, 6 or 7, or in 10 days with no test. ....

Maple School Board tweaks handbook to address spring break travel

Maple staff would have to cover that time with their own sick leave, per the revision made Monday. The extended emergency paid sick leave offered by the district to staff who need to quarantine at home due to COVID-19 exposure could not be used.
The revision applies only to international travel to level 4 countries, which as of Wednesday, Feb. 10, included all but a handful of countries, according to a CDC map. It does not apply to travel within the United States, even though the United States is listed as a level 4 country.
The board also approved a change to its COVID-19 mask protocol. A doctor’s note will now be required to exempt students or staff from wearing a mask in school. The revision would not affect students and staff who have current exemptions; they would be grandfathered in. ....

Broadband access in Wisconsin is essential. That’s the message Gov. Tony Evers sent during his State of the State address Jan. 12.
“This pandemic has underscored and in some ways, exacerbated the digital divide that exists across our state,” he said. “This pandemic has shown us firsthand that lack of access to high-speed internet continues to be a setback for kids, families and businesses across our state.” ....

Online-only classes will continue through the holidays in Maple

Some board members urged returning to in-person classes Monday for the mental health of students and because many children are struggling with learning under the online format. In a letter to the district, Douglas County Public Health Officer Kathy Ronchi said she supported returning to in-person instruction when possible.
Other board members were concerned that opening buildings up during a high level of COVID-19 activity in the county could expose some teachers to hundreds of students. Board member Brian Johnson wondered how many parents would even send their children back as there are only seven days before holiday break.
A number of school officials were split on the decision, including the administration team. On a staff survey, roughly 60% of teachers who responded reported they did not feel comfortable returning to in-person classes, Croney said. ....
