A man who pushed for 21 years to have Coon cheese renamed, saying the label was racist, is disappointed Indigenous people weren’t consulted about the product s new name, Cheer.
Author and anti-racism activist Stephen Hagan said he was glad and relieved that the cheese s manufacturer had announced the name change on Wednesday, to take effect in July, as he would no longer have to see the word coon – a derogatory term for a black person – every time he went to the supermarket.

Australia s Coon Cheese has been renamed after critics called the brand name racist.
Saputo Dairy Australia announced the brand s new name on Wednesday, and from July, the dairy products will be known as Cheer Cheese.
The change follows a careful and diligent review to ensure the brand is aligning with current attitudes and perspectives , the company says.

Saputo Dairy UK is rolling out a new packaging for its Vitalite dairy-free spread, highlighting its plant-based credentials.
The brand’s 500g tubs will now feature a “plant-based deliciousness” messaging in response to “growing consumer appetite for plant-based diets”, which Saputo Dairy said has seen 15% of consumers reduce their dairy or egg intake since the start of the Coronavirus pandemic.
The overall pack design has also been updated to highlight “key functional and nutritional benefits”.
Emilie Grundy, butters and spreads marketing controller at Saputo Dairy UK, said: “We have seen continued evolution in consumer attitudes to health and well-being over the past 12 months, heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic. ....
