Euphoria would prove divisive to some critics. After all, the Malcolm half of the movie’s title (John David Washington) devotes ample screen time in his arguments with his girlfriend, Marie (Zendaya), to railing against the idiocy and prejudice he perceives in contemporary film criticism. It’s a clever device that preemptively protects both Malcolm, a director and potentially Levinson against the sting of negative reviews.
Still, one thing most viewers will likely agree on is the undeniable appeal of the home where the film is set; its luxe modernity may call to mind the gleaming glass bastion in 2019’s ....

Movie producers like Ashley Levinson are used to high-stress multitasking. Yet making sure a cast and crew stayed safe and healthy during a clandestine shoot in the midst of the deadly coronavirus pandemic was an entirely new degree of challenge for Levinson, one of the principal backers of “Malcolm & Marie,” which was written and directed by her husband, Sam.“I don’t think I slept through the night until two weeks after we wrapped shooting,” said Levinson, reflecting on the high-wire act of pulling together the intimate new Netflix drama out Friday, Feb. 5, which was filmed over 14 days near Carmel over the summer to become one of the first films to wrap production during the pandemic. ....

After all the passion and grievances stirred up in
Malcolm & Marie, it s a tad on the nose to hear Cee-Lo on the Outkast track Liberation sing about the fine line between love and hate. But it s glorious to watch Zendaya, in a commanding turn that cements her arrival as a grownup movie star, skate along that line with both raw emotionality and the jaded remove of a perceptive woman toughened by experience. Sam Levinson s intense chamber drama explores the complex contracts of partnership while also examining life inside the bubble of the entertainment business, in particular the way artists can suck up all the oxygen in a relationship. ....
