The Medicine Hat News Santa Claus Fund was able to meet record demand this Holiday Season thanks to an outpouring of community support.
In mid-December the SCF had helped 668 families, including 1,397 children – and that was while emergency intake was still ongoing.
On top of the increased volume of those in need, the SCF was forced to cancel or alter major fundraisers. The Spirit of Giving Gala and annual auction were cancelled, while the Toy Run was held virtually.
Executive director Deanna Doerksen says the community came through this year to help bring Christmas to those in need. ....

The surprise hit Santa Claus Is Coming To Town parade – which aims to spread Holiday cheer while drumming up donations for the Medicine Hat News Santa Claus Fund – will be back out in full force Saturday to hit the areas of town that were missed in its inaugural five-day run last week.
“The Santa Claus Fund said that they’ve had a lot of late requests. Usually they handle their initial intakes in the beginning of December, but there were so many late requests,” said IG Wealth Management executive consultant Nathan Nunweiler, who helped organize the initiative with IG Wealth Management, the Santa Claus Fund and local emergency services. “This has really rebuilt their stockpiles so they can help a lot of other Medicine Hat ....

Mr. Lube in Medicine Hat presented a cheque for $2,940.54 to the Medicine Hat News Santa Claus Fund this week, helping the local organization deal with late demand and deliver a happy Holiday to families across the region.
The money was raised through a two-week promotion that sends $5 from every oil change to the Santa Claus Fund. Mr. Lube has raised $45,000 for the Santa Claus Fund since introducing the promotion in 2009. ....

Jolly old St. Nick began a special five-night Santa Claus Is Coming To Town parade on Friday evening in Redcliff and Crescent Heights – a festive tour of local neighbourhoods with the goal of spreading Holiday cheer and drumming up donations for the Medicine Hat News Santa Claus Fund.
“I think we’re excited to bring some light during these trying times for our community,” said Santa Claus Fund executive director Deanna Doerksen. “We’ve had a record number of families that we’ve served this year – and a record number for four years in a row, so we are definitely seeing an increase. When it’s all said and done we’re expecting the increase to be 30 per cent over last year. We’re just seeing lots of new families that are needing a hand up this season.” ....
