about to see can be viewed in entirety by visiting our website booktv.org and using the search function at the top of the page. first in february of 2015 the american enterprise institutes peter appeared on our author interview program afterwards where he argued that government housing policy caused the 2008 financial crisis. peter, your new book is called hidden in plain sight, what really caused the world s financial crisis and why it can happen again. you were a member of the financial crisis commission which was investigating the causes to have 07, 08 financial crisis. what did you see that they didn t? i had been locking at the housing system in the united states, dodd-frank and well, i m sorry, dodd-frank and fannie mae for quite a while before i got on the commission. i had a lot of background on what had been happening in the housing sector, so i was looking for the commission to look into what happened with fannie mae and freddie mac and what role they had
are delighted. to pose questions such as the fundamental question that os has put before the nation and indeed the entire world, people of good faith, how do we live together with our deepest differences? there are a lot of differences. how can we live together with those differences? how can we live peacefully together? differences can make as pretty uncomfortable, no matter what our background is, no matter how open-minded we maybe, differences can bother us. we didn t hear things we not only don t like, but the we very deeply disagree with. we hear things that make us angry. to take action. with what we re reading or what we are hearing and spoken on television and social media, we re very concerned about what we are hearing and how do we live peacefully with those differences. and what this book is exploring. the call for a global public square, religious freedom and the making of the world safe for democracy. join me again in welcoming os guinness. found initially is somewhat of a confusing puzzle. and that was perhaps best captured in this old usa today newspaper clippings. but it has been repeated a few times in a variety of different outlets. the notion that could recession be good for you. the headline confusing confused me at first. i had assumed that during the recession. matt, peoples health insurance would be lost. they would stop paying for medications, they would be depressed, they would turn to alcohol. and this and other news stories were based on a series of studies that suggested during recessionary. , unemployment is associated with improvements in life expectancy, which i found really confusing. and what i want to do is present what i would argue as one solution to this apparent puzzle. in presenting the solution, i think that we can gain insights into why we might be asking some of the wrong questions when we correlate the recession to a lot of different things. but i will do his first talk about how we
