CHICOPEE – School lunch is going mobile.
The department is purchasing a food truck and will be taking meals to the parks, playgrounds, farmers markets and anywhere else they can think to go by the end of June.
“I think it was petty evident this whole past year that school meals are … really about food insecurity and food access to our whole community and reaching as many people as we can,” said Melanie Wilk, the food service director.
Two years ago employees started discussing the idea of purchasing a food truck to supplement the summer food service program, funded by the federal Department of Agriculture, that provides daily free lunches to students at different parks in the city. The program ensures children, who all receive free breakfast and lunch at school, do not go hungry during summer vacation. ....

Chicopee School Committee elects new vice chairwoman

CHICOPEE – The School Committee selected a new vice chairwoman after years of having the same two people serve in the position.
Long-term member Mary-Elizabeth Pinak-Costello was voted in unanimously Wednesday night. She will replace Marjorie Wojcik, who has served in the position for many years. Member Donald Lamothe has also served as vice chairman for several terms.
Member James Tanhauser Jr. was nominated for the position as well, but in the end, he did not even vote for himself. Tanhauser said he had talked to a few members about taking over as vice chairman but decided to support Pniak-Costello, saying she is very active on the committee and would do a good job. ....
