David? david: trevor ault leading us off tonight. trevor, thank you. the system that brought these tornados has now moved out of the northeast. but in the west at this hour they are bracing for what s to come, that rare hurricane, hurricane hilary headed for california and the southwest. california, including los angeles, under the first ever tropical storm watch. take a look tonight hilary heading north, reaching california this weekend on sunday. it impact expected to last for days. crews in long beach already building sand berms. this will bring major flooding and more. let s get to lee goldberg of wabc, tracking it all. historic in nature, strength, and size. reporter: oh, a wingspan of about a thousand miles, david. a very potent storm, and still cat-4, so even if it weakens, it could be a mineral hurricane or tropical landfall. the satellite still impressive. very well defined eye. there are 40 foot waves toward the center. cabo, six to nine-foot waves. ....
I ve lost communication with you. but i m going to start talking. it is very difficult, the communication here right now on the ground here in bucha. so essentially what we re seeing here, what you have behind me here is a mass grave. this is the place you were just showing on those satellite images. and that s where the people here tell us that around 150 bodies have been buried here. it s also a place that we visited yesterday. it s an awful site. we re not going to come any closer to it. we want to be respectful of it. it is two sand berms that you can see, the actual mass grave is behind both of the sand berms. there are literally dozens of bodies at the top of that . ....
Evacuation. unfortunately this isn t new to us. we ve been through several of these over the past few years. mandatory evacuations. matthew did a similar path. we have sort of an idea what we re looking at. matthew obviously was closer. it was also weaker. a major storm surge wiped out the marine accused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. but nothing that it could have been. we were looking at a direct hit for a while. if you told me before the storm i d be happy about a cat two or three 100 miles off the coast, i would have said you were crazy. this is actually really good for us. sure. what type of storm surge are you expected, and how do you prepare for it? we re looking at three to five right now. we put berms up on the major impact site on our beach. we had bulldozers putting up sand berms. we ve done mitigations since the last hurricane. we re looking at our shorerhine resiliency on the riverside. being a barrier island, there are several in the path. we re on a rive ....
there mayable point in time during this storm where if you call 911 they won t be able to get to you. you will be on your own. this is your last chance to evacuate. rick: states of emergency remain in effect through georgia, the carolinas, and virginia. in south carolina the highway patrol has now reversed eastbound lanes on i-26 from charleston to columbia all lanes are now westbound to help speed coastal evacuations. and in north carolina, the governor has issued a mandatory statewide evacuation order for barrier islands along the entire coast in preparation of hurricane dorian beginning wednesday at 8:00 a.m. i know it s a beautiful day out there, but we want everyone to be safe. well, here in neptune and atlantic beach, the city built these sand berms in between the dunes not just to prevent people from going out on the beach but more to stop the water from coming. in they are talking about a 3 to 5-foot storm surge, maybe more on top of a tide ....
Has been made of the fact that it s going to be flooding. the surges, are going to be the real problem and that s going to continue through the weekend. what were you able to see as far as flooding and damage coming in off the beach from where you were last night? we saw the beach behind us disappear overnight. the ocean came right over the sand berms. it was a scary sight to see, the giant ocean coming up over the berms. the realization if you slept off you would be gone forever. the water was coming over today i especially at high tide. even along the coastline was so heavy flooding, the rain hasn t stopped. when you heard the forecasters say 20 more inches, this is going to be unbelievable. shannon: we appreciate you being there on the front line, you and your crew stay safe. ....
