San Roque residents complain of foul smell from wastewater of nearby construction site

At least three individuals living in Sitio San Roque interviewed by Save San Roque Alliance, a group fighting for the residents’ rights, said the foul odor can be smelled even inside their houses that some of their family members also suffered from vomittting and stomach aches.
“Anim na kaming nagkakasakit dito. ‘Yung una akala namin normal lang, di namin inaasahan na galing dito yung amoy nya (Six of us here already got sick. At first, we thought it was just normal. We did not expect that the smell came from the leak),” Alma Esteban, community leader of Area J, said. ....

San Roque residents denounce demolition threats amid pandemic

Save San Roque Alliance, a group fighting for the community members’ rights, said several community leaders, particularly in the Palochina area, were allegedly being coerced to convince the residents to give up their houses.
This is because, the alliance said, a developer will “reportedly create a road from Agham Road leading towards the current establishments in Vertis North as part of the planned Quezon City Central Business District (QCCBD) and will be needing their part of the community to be demolished.”
About 142 households, whose sources of income mostly depend on street selling and construction works, would be affected. ....

Youth volunteers who painted anti-cop mural threatened of arrest —rights group

Save San Roque Alliance expressed alarm over the action committed by the police since, the group said, the mural is only “part of the clearing and designing of learning spaces” for a community-based school in the area.
“No specific violation was cited… Half of the four youth volunteers they tried to nab are minors,” the group said in a Twitter message.
In a statement, the group said that their paralegal, Nanoy Rafael, immediately went to the scene upon learning of the incident, which happened around 2 p.m.
Rafael said, the police then asked them to come with them to the police station for legal charges although they “did not have any warrant of arrest.” ....
