SMPD chief shares 2020 cite & release report

San Marcos Chief of Police Stan Standridge shared the 2020 compiled Cite & Release Report during Wednesday’s Chief Advisory Panel meeting.
“Incarceration for nonviolent offenses as a model isn t working,” Standridge said. “The struggle I have as a professional police officer is we have difficulty identifying plan b and developing capacity for plan b. What do you do in lieu of arrest?”
The report contains data related to cite and release minus the first quarter of the year because they had not yet been requested to collect this data.
Of 1,167 incidents, 27%, or 317, were citation eligible offenses. Eighty-four of those individuals were arrested due to reasons outlined in the cite and release ordinance. ....

City sees crime fluctuation during 2020

San Marcos experienced a year of high aggravated assaults despite low homicide counts in 2020.
San Marcos Chief of Police Stan Standridge says homicide is not the true indicator of violence in a community, rather he says aggravated assault when a deadly weapon was used or an incident resulted in serious bodily injury should be looked at to gauge violence.
There were 129 incidents of aggravated assault in San Marcos in 2020 and in 2019 down from 138 in 2020.
“You see it has somewhat fluctuated,” Standridge said. “It hits a high crescendo of 138 and then stabilizes at about 130. There are some atypical years but 129 is high. What this means is out of 365, 129 days a citizen tried to kill another citizen but they don’t because of medical intervention, or they miss when they shoot.” ....

Standridge makes pledge to community

San Marcos Chief of Police Stan Standridge had just over a month under his belt in the position when he addressed the community in his first Chief Advisory Panel Meeting Monday night.
“I want to broaden the scope and purpose as to why we are here,” Standridge said. “Cite and release is such a small proponent of what we do on a daily basis. We need to have a much more detailed conversation.”
Standridge not only pledged his dedication to the task, stating San Marcos was his forever home, he pledged to address the deep societal issues plaguing the police department and the community. ....
