A California hospital will possibly be fined $43,000 from county health officials for potentially inciting a COVID-19 superspreader event that s been traced back to an inflatable Christmas tree costume.
Health officials at the Santa Clara County Department of Public Health said they counted 77 staff and 15 patient cases and one staff member death connected to the event at San Jose Medical Center.
Health officials say they were unaware of the first 43 cases until news reports came out this week. San Jose was issued a $1,000 fine last week for each delayed report of a positive case of the coronavirus, but cases since early January connected to the holiday event spiraled from the initial 43 to over 90.
