even. all of the flooding blocking this major highway behind me. we did what we had to do. i wouldn t have changed anything. i lost my boat, everything i had, but saved three guys, it s worth it. can we get some help around here? would that be too much to ask? live from london, this is cnn newsroom with max foster. it is monday october 3rd, 9:00 a.m. in london, 4:00 a.m. on the east coast. five days after hurricane ian slammed into florida. at least 76 people have lost their lives. and entire communes have been wiped out. in some of the worst hit areas, workers have not only trying to find signs of life beneath the rubble, they re helping those who have lost their entire livel livelihoods. the loss is so great places like fort myers may never return to what they were. there are a lot of people with no homes to return to now or in the future. they ll be eligible for individual assistance. we re still in the search and recovery assistance. and then begins ....

still without power. the extent of the death and destruction may just be coming to light. governor ron desantis is defending officials in lee county where more than half the storm related deaths have been announced. they re facing criticism for issuing evacuation orders a day later than neighboring counties. here s what governor ron desantis told cnn. is that what you ll be reviewing, looking at the evacuation orders even lee county if they had followed their own evaluation orders from what we reviewed they should have had the evacuation order sooner. the issue is they informed people and most people did not want to do it. that s just the reality. you re in a situation, are you going to grab somebody out of their home that doesn t want to. i don t think that s the appropriate use of government. i think that takes it a little too far. reporter: boris sanchez joins us live from fort myers this morning to tell us what they re dealing with there. boris, what s the l ....

Efforts. while 600,000 people remain without power. here you can see a police car pushed by floodwaters into the woods in central florida. a nearby bridge was also torn apart by the hurricane. and these images show the roads in and out of san bell island stranding those who chose to stay behind. many residents are unsure what to do next. can we get some help down here? you know, would that be too much to ask. look around here, there s nothing. we have no power, no phone service, nothing. we d just like a little help. i d like a little help to get my home back in shape because i have nowhere to go. there s nothing left. i don t know. i am optimistic, it s just it s heartbreaking for all those families, businesses. that s why i m very sad. what goes through your mind ....

Dealing with there. boris, what s the latest? reporter: good morning, brianna and alex. unfortunately over the weekend we got the news we were dreading. officials confirming a spike in the death toll. more than 76 people killed by hurricane ian here in the sunshine state they were able to access areas that they weren t because they were cut off by the storm parts of fort myers beach, san bell island, cap tee a island now accessible to crews coming through wreckage and finding bodies. the recovery is slow, hundreds of thousands of people remain without power. many still without drinking water. and so, it is going to be a delicate process of getting these communities back on their feet. in the meantime, there are very serious questions about how evacuations were handled here in lee county. keep in mind the emergency management plan in lee county stipulates if there is a 10% chance of a 6 foot storm surge, ....

for every wobble, one degree made so much difference, depending on the community where you were waiting for sandy. with every one degree wobble, this is big news for marco island, naples, ft. myers. even tampa. if you re in tampa, lot of people care about your family and property, you would rather see it go further inland at the expense of ft. myers and naples because it may be weaker by the time it gets to you. they re calling for 120 miles per hour wind gusts in tampa. that s not built to withstand that. that s category three wind gust in tampa. even though i am more concerned with storm surge as we go through ft. myers, cape coral, san bell island, but the whipped gusts may be in tampa as they are this afternoon. lost the weather station in key west. that will happen. we lose reporters when we get to peak winds. ....
