Delainey Mellott SALINEVILLE Delainey Mellott, daughter of Rick and Jessica Mellott of East Liverpool, has been selected as the Kiwanis Student of the Month for February at Southern Local High School. She is ranked third in her graduating class with a 4.378 GPA. Delainey has been an Honor Roll student throughout her high school career. She is an active member of National Honor Society, Varsity Club, President of Senior class and Student Council. She was on the 2019 Fall Homecoming Court and 2021 Winter Homecoming Court. She has participated in the College Credit Plus Program at Kent State and Eastern Gateway Community College. ....
Kaiden Curtis Sixth-grader Samuel Yakubek will represent St. Paul School in Salem in the Columbiana County Spelling Bee March 3 after winning a spell-off against fellow sixth-grader Kaiden Curtis during the online school bee this week on the written word “corporate.” This year will be quite different for spellers at many schools and during the county contest due to Covid-19 and the need for social distancing. Instead of standing on stage, they’ll sit at a computer screen. As runner-up, Curtis will serve as the St. Paul School alternate for the county bee, which will use an online platform of 30 words. At St. Paul School, 23 fifth- and sixth-grade students took a written test of 25 words, with 13 qualifying for the school bee, which used the Scripps online platform of 25 words. There was a tie between Sam and Kaiden, who both scored 19 out of 25. They had a spell-off of written words “detergent,” “snorkels,” and “corporate.” (Submitted photos) ....
