A lot has changed in Capitola in 150 years. It has seen a growth in both population in businesses, its roads and highways have replaced train service and it was even incorporated as a city during that time.
"Adna Hecox, who preached the first Protestant sermon in California, was living in Soquel when he established the state's first Temperance Society in 1847," writes Ross Eric Gibson. "It was a self-help order where one 'took the pledge' to abstain from alcohol."
"Martina Castro was the first woman in California to apply for a Spanish land grant, becoming the county's largest landholder," writes Ross Eric Gibson. "She ended up with two grants, Soquel in 1833 and the Augmentation in 1844, reaching from the bay to Loma Prieta Peak, totaling 34,470 acres. Her brother-in-law Francisco Rodriguez followed her lead, gaining Rancho Rodeo in 1834."
