Samsung heirs appreciated for donating inherited assets
Heirs of the late Samsung Group Chairman Lee Kun-hee said Wednesday they would pay 12 trillion won ($10.7 billion) in inheritance tax on the deceased tycoon s assets estimated at 26 trillion won. They also promised to donate 1 trillion won for medical research and healthcare as well as 23,000 pieces from the late chairman s art collection. Although the tax payment is a legal obligation, it is appreciable as most scions of other family-run conglomerates try to pay less than required.
It also shows how transparent Korean society has become, and that the Samsung owner family has accepted this change. We hope the decision will serve as an occasion that pushes all chaebol families to honestly pay due taxes and rectify their unfair practice of the tax-free inheritance of wealth.
