In a setback on Wednesday, the ruling BJP-JJP combine in Haryana could win only one of three mayoral seats for which elections were held recently. The mayoral elections in the cities of Ambala, Panchkula and Sonipat were held on Sunday. While the BJP struggled to win in Panchkula, the Congress and the Haryana Jan Chetna Party (HJCP) bagged mayoral posts in Sonipat and Ambala, respectively. It was for the first time that direct elections were held for mayoral posts in the three cities.

The elections were conducted to elect the mayors and members of all the wards of Ambala, Panchkula and Sonipat municipal corporations, the president and members of the Municipal Council of Rewari and the municipal committees of Sampla (Rohtak), Dharuhera (Rewari) and Ukalana (Hisar). The Harayana municipal elections will be held on Sunday, December 27. It will be a fierce competition between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) combo and Congress.
The polling will be conducted from 8 am to 5.30 pm under strict COVID-19 guidelines. It is going to be the first elections that will be held in Haryana after the BJP-JJP alliance came to power in the state in 2019.
Polling stations will undergo mandatory sanitisation, and voters will have to wear face masks.
