A monument in Sri Lanka to commemorate the tens of thousands of Tamils who died in the civil war is to be rebuilt following a hunger strike by students protesting at its demolition.
The memorial to Tamils who lost their lives in Mullivaikkal was demolished at Jaffna University last week.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) had said that the monument was a threat to unity in the country.
But angry students protested and went on hunger strike over its demolition.
Now the monument is to be rebuilt, said the university s vice-chancellor, who laid a foundation stone on Monday. ....

The decision to remove the war monument at the Jaffna University was taken by Vice Chancellor of Jaffna University Professor Srisatkunarajah, as it was seen as an obstruction to unity and reconciliation, University Grants Commission Chairman Prof. Sampath Amaratunge said.
Issuing a statement Prof. Amaratunga said several groups in the Jaffna University attempted to construct a war monument within the university premises around the year 2018. It appears that this memorial statue was developed over the years. But honestly the monument can be an obstruction to the unity between the North and the South,” he said. ....

UGC Chairman explains monument removal in Jaffna University

Professor Sampath Amaratunge, the Chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC) explained the removal of the monument in the University of Jaffna.
The said monument was erected around 2018 and the removal took place as it can be an obstacle for peace in South and North, Professor Amarathunga explained. The decision of the removal was made by Professor Sri Sadgunaraja, the Vice Chancellor of Jaffna University yesterday evening (08).
Professor Amaratunge further stated “We do not want war memorials but peace monuments.” ....
