Too many sites are wasted on parking, councillors believe

News from Douglas Printed and digital download photos available Douglas councillors have, yet again, hit out at undeveloped brownfield sites in the capital being used for car parking. In this month’s sitting of the council, members debated parking after planners rejected an application to extend the use of a piece of land on the South Quay for parking by a further two years. The council’s environmental services committee had written to planners objecting to the application, a position supported by council leader David Christian. Mr Christian said the use of brownfield sites for car parking ’drags the town down’ and provides no benefit to the island’s capital.

Douglas Town Hall Printed and digital download photos available The chairman of Douglas’s housing committee has defended the authority’s record on maintenance after a colleague said it was ’unacceptable’. Claire Wells was responded to questions from Councillor Sam Hamer as the council published its figures for the second quarter of 2020/21. Throughout the second quarter the council managed to carry out an average 57.3% of emergency, urgent and routine repairs within the target time. On average 76.7% of void properties, including those requiring major works, were completed within the specified programme. Mr Hamer said the figures were ’unacceptable’ and asked Mrs Wells if the council’s targets were ’unachieveable’.
