Pandemic Takes Heavy Toll on Youth Mental Health


Psychiatrist Tami Benton, MD, had a 5-year-old patient threaten to run into traffic to end her life.
When Benton asked the girl what she thought would happen after she died, the girl replied, I will come back tomorrow, and I ll be a good girl, and my parents will be happy again.
The child s parents lost their jobs during the pandemic. As a result, her mother slid into depression, and the girl s parents were unable to care for her, explained Benton, the psychiatrist-in-chief and executive director and chair of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Children s Hospital of Philadelphia. ....

Senate panel examines mental/behavioral health lessons from COVID-19 response

The Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions Committee yesterday held a hearing on using COVID-19 response lessons to address the mental health and substance use disorder crises. 
Testifying at the hearing were representatives from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Salud Family Health Centers in Colorado, the South Carolina Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services, and Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute in Dallas.     
Chairwoman Patty Murray, D-Wash., said stress from COVID-19 has severely damaged the nation’s mental health, citing survey findings that half of adults say the pandemic has affected their mental well-being. Among other indicators, she cited a nationwide increase in drug overdose deaths and a 30% increase in youth suicide rates in King County, Wash.  ....

Now Moderna vaccine sparks blood clot fears as patient shares how he thought he was going to die


Jeff Johnson, 49, of Brighton, Colorado, received the Moderna coronavirus vaccine at the Salud Family Health Centers
One week later he started experiencing pain and swelling in his left leg and said he thought he was going to die
Johnson was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which is when a clot forms deep in the body such as in the thigh or lower leg
According to Johnson, his doctor said it s possible the blood clot could have been caused by the vaccine  
DVT is different than the blood clots in the brain that have been linked to the J&J vaccine, which led to a pause recommended by the CDC and FDA ....

John Santistevan is helping vaccinate communities one shot at a time.
“Our mission is to provide services to lower income, underserved, ethnic populations,” he said.
Since the vaccines became available, his team at Salud Family Health Centers has administered about 70,000 COVID-19 shots.
They were planning on giving out 1,000 Johnson & Johnson single-dose vaccine shots next week. That plan is in limbo now after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advised Americans to pause using the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, with authorities investigating health concerns tied to the J&J shot, including blood clots. ....
