PATRIOTIC MP Sir David Amess wants the UK to quit Eurovision after finishing rock bottom, insisting the event is “designed to humiliate us”. After James Newman secured zero points on Saturday, Sir David boldly called for the UK to stop competing. He has even lodged a Commons Early Day Motion urging the BBC to “no longer spend licence fee money on an event designed to humiliate the UK”. He further suggested “if the winning song is to be broadcast on the public airwaves, it should be preceded by a public health warning”. Sir David, Tory MP for Southend West, said: “I’ve been a fan of Eurovision for a long time, and many years ago I was able to congratulate Sandy Shaw on her victory. ....
A number of Southend town centre shops lie empty after a challenging year battling the coronavirus pandemic. The retail sector and outdoor hospitality were finally allowed to reopen on April 12, but some stores appear to have remained closed for good. As a result of the numerous lockdowns, many businesses have had to rely on government grants and schemes to survive. With about 17 shops standing vacant in the high street, business bosses and Echo readers have banded together to come up with ways to breathe life back into the high street. These were units that are no longer trading and are either on the market or closed down with no news to report on - with the count beginning at the top of the high street near WHSmith down to the bottom near The Royal Hotel. ....
A SALON boss is preparing for no sleep and a week of creating weird and whacky hairstyles when she heads backstage at the Eurovision Song Contest. Claire Turner, who owns Salon Tinted in Westcliff, is looking forward to the “highlight of her career” as she joins the backstage hair team at the competition. Creating a whole host of looks for the dancers, singers and performers, Ms Turner is “expecting the unexpected”. The 42-year-old - who has flown all over the world teaching hairdressing - will travel to Rotterdam in the Netherlands on May 16. She said: “It’s such an amazing honour to be taking part, I’ve flown to so many places like Russia, Asia, Brazil and Europe teaching others how to colour hair and I’m an annual judge at the British Hairdressing Awards, but I’ve never done anything like this. ....
