Salome Mwangi
The Idaho Nonprofit Center has announced three members to its board of directors. Salome Mwangi has called Boise home since relocating here 16 years ago via the refugee resettlement program from Nairobi, Kenya. She has a professional background in banking, finance and IT, which she gained while working in Kenya. Since moving to the US, she uses her multilingual skills to foster communication between former refugees and their service providers as they navigated systems in making the Treasure Valley home. Along the way, she has become a cultural broker, realizing that the culture behind each language bears weight in living life with cross-cultural relevance. She currently manages the Refugee Speakers Bureau at the Idaho Office for Refugees.

BOISE, Idaho The Idaho COVID-19 Vaccine Advisory Committee (CVAC) met on Friday to discuss Idaho s plan for the next step in the vaccine rollout, but officials also talked about ways to better communicate information about vaccines to Idaho s refugee community. We don t have words like DNA, we don t have words like nuclear, the nucleus or the cell, said Salome Mwangi with the Idaho Office for Refugees. Even when they are having conversations with their doctors, should the doctor say something like hypertension, they may not realize that the doctor is talking about high blood pressure.
