Wines of the world: 50 of the best for under R760

Wines of the world: 50 of the best for under R760 South Africans have a special relationship with wine. After all, the country’s vineyards and wineries produce some of the best wines in the world. This year, the viticulture industry was all but crushed by a stringent lockdown. In 2019 there were 98437 hectares of land under vines, according to South African Wine Industry information and Systems. These vineyards produced 319 782 880 litres of wine for export. The viticulture industry has been battling a three year drought before Covid-19 lockdowns hammered the industry this year. Wineries and related tourism in the country employed over 300000 people. It is unclear exactly how many people lost their jobs when the industry ground to a halt. When you raise your glass this festive season, please consider filling it with a locally produced tipple…There are a few on this tantalising list. – Melani Nathan
