.-Bonhams Australia presents The Lucio’s Collection in the forthcoming auction LUCIO’S: Food, Art & Friendship. Taking place on Sunday 21 March, the auction will present 168 works by many of Australia’s most respected artists, spanning the restaurant’s almost 40 years of history and celebrating Lucio and Sally Galletto’s contribution to Australia’s culinary and art landscapes.
Merryn Schriever, Director Bonhams Australia comments: ‘As Lucio once said, the combination of great food, great service and great art on the walls is one of the best dining experiences you can imagine. The magic of Lucio’s drew a generation of artists who claimed the restaurant their own and where many books were launched and exhibitions opening nights were celebrated. Now Bonhams presents Lucio’s Collection offering an opportunity to own a work of a ....

If fine art was a fair exchange for long lunches shared during 37 years at the Paddington restaurant Lucio’s then John Olsen and Tim Storrier must have been extremely well fed.
A total of 168 artworks, valued at between $560,000 and $820,000, have been retrieved from the walls of the famous eatery and are to be brought to auction on March 21. Nineteen lots are by Olsen, the most expensive being
Improvisation on an Octopus, 1990, with a price guide of $40,000 to $60,000.
But it is Storrier’s
Point to Point (The Midday Blaze Line), 1992 – an oil on canvas – that carries the highest auction hopes. ....

Lucio’s art collection begins before you set foot in the restaurant. A tangle of pipes by Dave Teer sits high on a wall. Francesco Petrolo’s metal eggs nest in a paperbark tree. Salvatore Zofrea’s once-controversial ceramic naked woman gazes from a window. By the front door, Garry Shead’s mosaic has the writer D.H. Lawrence, his wife and kangaroo picnicking in Italy.
Inside you can easily miss Sidney Nolan’s gold-framed sketch, which started the whole thing. Your eye is drawn along sunshine-yellow walls crowded with artworks and curiosities by many of Australia’s best artists, from late masters such as John Coburn and Charles Blackman to younger stars Luke Sciberras and Joshua Yeldham. ....
