On Monday 26 April, it will be four years since the Western Cape High Court found the government’s R1-trillion nuclear deal and associated energy procurement processes to be “illegal and unconstitutional”. South Africa was spared from a corrupt deal under the Zuma government that would have bankrupted the country. This day also marks 35-years since the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986 (Fukushima followed almost exactly 25-years later, on 11 March 2011). Civil Society is marking the fourth anniversary of the court case win as an important historic moment in our fight against corruption and state capture, while warning that the government seems to be once again set on building unnecessary and unaffordable nuclear energy. ....

Muslims and Christians stand side by side, hands open to the sky or pressed together as they pray for coronavirus patients and healthcare workers in Cape Town.
Religious groups of all faiths and backgrounds have taken it in turns to take part in joint prayers outside hospitals over the past week, a spiritual show of support as a second wave of infections wreaks havoc across the country.
In normal circumstances, any leader in this community would go freely to the house of a sick or bereaved person, said Pastor Gerhard de Vries-Block of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. ....

Cape Town – A number of communities across the Cape on Sunday held special outdoor prayer sessions in support of Covid-19 patients and victims.
In a strong show of support, community-based organisations, faith groups and compassionate individuals came out in their numbers to host prayer sessions at hospitals and community halls for people infected with Covid-19 and the families of those who have lost their loved ones to the virus.
Kraaifontein community leader Denver Dreyer said the prayer sessions provided a platform for communities to support those battling with Covid-19. ....
