2021 Election: Candidates bring in thousands of dollars for school board races


Given that most school boards races were uncompetitive in past years, even first-time candidates would often forgo fundraising on their way to certain victory. While many candidates are still choosing to run low or no-cost campaigns, a few candidates are collecting thousands of dollars to secure a seat on a board.
In Hermiston, Position 4 incumbent Brent Pitney is slightly outraising his challenger, attorney Sally Anderson Hansell, as of Friday, May 14.
According to the Oregon Secretary of State’s Office, more than 90% of Pitney’s campaign contributions have come from two sources: Knerr Construction, his employer, and Goller Health Insurance Agency, a Hermiston business owned by Hermiston School Board Chair Josh Goller. ....

An Oregon pastor declined to close his church following a COVID outbreak that occurred in the said congregation. The decision of senior pastor Scott Erickson was announced during his Mother s Day sermon, ABC News reported.

Pastor Erickson announced his decision to keep the doors of his church open to those who attended the service and those who are watching the church s live stream online broadcast. Erickson noted that voices in their community and region want to close the place of worship.

Natzeryt “Nat” Viertel stepped out of the shed at his south Salem home, aimed a shotgun at an approaching Salem firefighter and pulled the trigger.
There was only a click.
Salem firefighter Kyle Holestine retreated back out the driveway to the street - Southeast Ewald Avenue - on the evening of April 2, talking to Viertel all the while, trying to calm him.
Viertel, 22, instead racked the shotgun again, advancing on the firefighter.
Within moments, he aimed the shotgun at two Salem police officers, defying orders to drop the weapon. ....

Controversial Facebook comment by Salem school board candidate leads to call from NAACP to end campaign

SALEM - The Salem-Keizer NAACP has called on Kari Zohner, a candidate for Salem-Keizer School Board, to end her campaign after she criticized Oregon State University for posting a photo of George Floyd earlier this week.
The university posted a photo of Floyd Tuesday on its Facebook page after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of Floyd’s murder. Floyd’s murder sparked nationwide protests against racism and police bruality last year, including in Salem. ....
