Both Cal men’s and women’s rowing fell short of a Pac-12 championship Sunday. However, both teams still earned podium finishes: The men came in second while the women finished third overall. Sunday’s events marked the final race before both the men and women travel to their respective national championships.
On the championship course, the men fell to their heralded rival, taking second place in every race to the Huskies. The varsity eight finished just 4.5 seconds behind Washington while the second varsity lost by 6.4 seconds. Similarly, the third varsity eight fell to the Huskies by 2.2 seconds.

This weekend, Cal men’s and women’s rowing are officially entering the championship stretch as they head to Sacramento to race at the Pac-12 championships. The Bears will look to perform well this weekend in hopes to gear up for their respective national championships: the IRAs for the men and the NCAAs for the women.
Both teams are coming off rather disappointing performances at the Windermere Cup in Seattle just two weekends ago. Of all of Cal’s men’s and women’s boats, only the men’s third varsity eight recorded a win over Washington in the Cup.

Cal women’s rowing kicked off its season in victorious fashion last weekend at the Las Vegas Invitational. Throughout two days of competition, the Bears claimed five of six races between their varsity four, varsity eight and second varsity eight.
The blue and gold’s road to their first regatta was not a smooth one, however. According to Cal women’s rowing head coach Al Acosta, the Bears found themselves dealing with last-minute COVID-19 complications, as one of their boats that was set to compete had athletes who tested positive for COVID-19. The news resulted in lineup changes for Cal just days before racing.

Making the trip will be No. 1 Washington, No. 16 UCLA, No. 19 Oregon State, USC, Washington State, No. 9 Alabama and San Diego.
