GUWAHATI: An increase in the flow of liquor into poll-bound Assam from neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya has raised alarm bells in Dispur. Excise department sources said if this goes unchecked, this might play a role in influencing the electorate in the upcoming assembly polls. “Following a series of meetings between senior administrative and police officials of Assam, with their Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya counterparts, it has been agreed that intelligence inputs and other vital information will be shared by officials on both sides of the borders,” said Sailendra Pandey, PRO to the state excise minister Parimal Suklabaidya. “There is an apprehension that clandestine in-flow of liquor into the state may play a role in influencing the electorate ahead of the assembly election,” he added.

According to reports, the police have realised fines to the tune of Rs 63,000. The police set up check posts and checked vehicles at places like Ambari, ABC, Ganeshguri, Dispur, Jalukbari, Chandmari, and Ulubari, among others. The drive was carried out under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner Police (Traffic) Pranjit Borah along with the officials from Transport, Excise and Health Departments.
