Pounding the carolinas. it is still extremely dangerous, and joining us now with a quick update on the ground in north top sail beach, north carolina, is hurricane steve harrigan. steve? sean, this part of the coast has simply been pounded for the past 30 hours. we have seen more than 20 inches of rain and winds strong enough to shear off the roofs of houses close to that beach line. finally we are getting some break in the action. a light rain and light breeze. that s going to make it a lot easier for first responders to do their job and that job is growing he a the water keeps rising. the police chief here says they re going out at first light to try and see areas. they have been unable to get to the roads here still very treacherous. downed power lines. water and debris. it s going to be the start of a long clean up and rescue operation at first light. sean, back to you. sean: all right. steve, i don t think anyone is getting gas at that bp station any time soon. for everybody p ....

Sheriffs and police chiefs and mayors for that matter meeting some three per day yesterday. trying to communicate with people and all the agencies the best i can say they are trying to stay in communication. when it hits do what we need tto do. steve: we are looking at image in top sail beach where a canopy blew over and there she goes. 1.7 million people we are told in the storm target area to evacuate. that many people did not. now this morning they are waking up and in some cases there is water inside their houses. they have got to put the lives of the first responders into peril to have them get out. that s got to be frustrating. frustrating and the problems we have the flooding is major. we experienced that three years ago in matthew outside of columbia and the dams ....
Especially along the carolina coast. go north of bald head island jeff flock is in the wind. jeff? i thought we had seen the worst of it, shep. we got a pretty good ride on the way in as the storm approached us. we got actually into the eye earlier. which is a treat for those who cover hurricanes actually see the eye. got about 30 minutes of it now the back end of this storm as i guess we should have known based on radar presentation is pretty strong. and now, of course, the wind is coming the other direction since it s passed us, we are getting it right off the ocean and that means right off the beach, too. and, you know, i will tell you, if you can see my hand it s full of sand just standing here. so, the problem is potentially, storm surge eroding the sand do you knows and the berms, that s a problem. i will say this. since we have two seconds. ....
The hurricane, the winds are coming out of west. see that? the palm fronds are blowing towards the beach there because the winds are coming out of west. the winds are coming from the land because the storm has a counterclockwise flow. so, below the eye of the storm, the winds come from the dry side. all of that air will continue to blow from the land to the sea. so, the sort of on shore flow, the flooding of rivers and that sort of thing will not be happening in myrtle beach unless there is some crazy change of storm that the hurricane center does not anticipate. the exact opposite is true north of the eye. for instance, where our steve harrigan has been all day. north top sail beach in north carolina. it s still coming in like a hurricane there. steve, what do you see? i know, shepard, i am hearing all this talk about this is a rain event. the storm is weakening. that is certainly not the case where i m standing. ....
