KAMIMINE, Saga The local government here has added five insect species including the Hercules beetle one of the largest beetles in the world to its hometown tax gifts, aiming to make them one of the popular topics to revitalize the town, an official said.
According to Saga Prefecture, Kamimine collected a preliminary figure of 4.4 billion yen (about $40 million) in local tax donations in fiscal 2020 the highest amount among all 20 municipalities in the prefecture. The town is targeting 4 billion yen (about $36 million) in fiscal 2021. ....

SAGA Fishermen are often known to have tough leathery hands like old boots, but in southwest Japan one seaweed fisherman is famous for his talented fingers that play the piano.
Yoshiaki Tokunaga, 60, the miracle fisherman pianist from Kawasoe in the city of Saga, farms nori seaweed. He uses his large hands to play Franz Liszt s masterpiece, La Campanella. Tokunaga is self-taught and has been playing the piano for nine years. When he posted a video on YouTube of himself practicing, he quickly drew attention from all over Japan. ....

SAGA An English mock exam given to high school students in Saga Prefecture in southwestern Japan has drawn criticism over a question that could be construed as associating Islam with terrorists, leading the prefectural board of education to express its regret.
The English test for first-year high school students was part of prefecture-wide mock exams for first- and second-year high school students. One sentence in the exam quoted a person s father as saying Egyptian boys who couldn t earn money would go to a mosque for their food and become terrorists. The question was prepared by a voluntary study group comprising prefectural high schools and other bodies. ....

SAGA A mayor in the southwestern Japan prefecture of Saga has apologized over what he has described as an inappropriate comment about children with developmental disabilities.
During a GM21 Meeting between the prefectural governor of Saga and mayors of 20 municipalities within the prefecture on Jan. 26, Kanzaki Mayor Shigeyuki Matsumoto, 70, remarked, If the cause can be ascertained, children who don t end up that way (with developmental disabilities) may be able to spend their whole lives happily as abled people. ....
