Saudi rights activists launch hunger strike in jail
Detained Saudi human rights activists reportedly staged a hunger strike in Riyadh’s Al-Ha ir Prison on 6 March. 
Maha al-Qahtani, wife of Mohammed al-Qahtani, one of the founders of the opposition Hasm movement, said her husband and about 30 other people had started a hunger strike, including human rights defenders Fawzan al-Harbi and Aissa al-Nukhaifi.
Mohammed al-Qahtani, 55, is a Saudi economics professor, political activist, and one of the founding members of the Saudi Civil and Political Rights Association (ACPRA).
Qahtani was arrested in March 2013 and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
ACPRA members and more than 30 others are on hunger strike in al-Hair prison in Riyadh. ....

Biden Announces End to U.S. Support for Offensives in Yemen


President Joe Biden announced today that the United States will end support for Saudi-led offensives in Yemen, citing a war that has “created a humanitarian and strategic catastrophe” in what is the poorest Arab country.
In remarks delivered at the State Department, President Biden called for a cease-fire and to restore “long dormant” peace talks. He also said the U.S. would no longer provide “relevant” arm sales, without naming countries, but would still support Saudi Arabia’s “sovereignty and territorial integrity.” Along with the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia has led a coalition against Yemen’s current leadership, an Iranian-backed Houthi rebel group. ....

The US State Department designated Yemen’s Houthi movement the most effective force in fighting al-Qaeda as a “terrorist” organization. Meanwhile Washington and Saudi Arabia have supported al-Qaeda.

The United States government has designated the enemy of al-Qaeda in Yemen as a terrorist organization, after spending years backing al-Qaeda in the country.
Like the US-led wars on Syria, Libya, former Yugoslavia, and 1980s Afghanistan, Yemen represents an example of an armed conflict where Washington has supported al-Qaeda and similar Salafi-jihadist extremists in order to foment regime change and extend its hegemony. ....
