GARRETT â Several speakers challenged Garrett graduates to make every moment count as they embark on their futures.
In a graduation ceremony Friday night, 144 seniors received diplomas. Garrettâs high school band and concert choir performed several musical selections.
Superintendent Tonya Weaver presented diplomas, and Ryan Hathaway and Shannon Harman presented roses to the seniors.
Class president Ryan DePew reminded his classmates to cherish what they have accomplished.
âThat diploma is more than just a piece of paper,â he said. âIt is a combination of hard work, dedication, procrastination, failures, victories, sweat, tears and so much more.
âWhen you walk across that stage, do so with confidence and pride, because every single one of you deserves it. As Mackelmore sings, âThis is the moment, tonight is the night, we put our hands up like the ceiling cannot hold us.â
GARRETT — Keegan McComb and Sadie Best were named Garrett High School’s top two seniors, based on grade point average. Each will present speeches during a graduation ceremony Friday.
In some cases, that meant canceling events such as the Heritage Days Festival and Garrett Alumni Reunion.
The annual alumni golf outing still took place, and school leaders throughout DeKalb County worked with county health officials to determine how to conduct in-person classes.
Safety accommodations were in effect that enabled a new queen to be crowned at the annual Miss Garrett pageant.

As COVID-19 wreaked havoc on nearly every aspect of society in 2020, the Garrett-Keyser-Butler school district invited parents to complete a survey regarding plans for re-entry plans for the upcoming school year.
The Railroaders achieved several milestones this season.
The 1,000th game in the history of the program took place Jan. 29 against Lakeland. Garrettâs 62-49 victory was Lapadotâs 150th as head coach.
At 20-3, this was the seventh 20-win season in program history.
In a Dec. 8 game at Westview, won by Garrett 52-12, the Railroaders established a new record for fewest points allowed in a game.
Other team records set were fewest points allowed in a half (0) and most three-point field goals made in a game (13).
Sophomore Bailey Kelham led the team in scoring with 383 points, for an average of 16.7 points per contest.
