For the first time ever, astronomers are witnessing a galaxy's 'death' as its happening

Bengaluru: Astronomers have observed many ‘dead’ galaxies but the process of the death itself hasn’t been observed before until now.
Using the telescope Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), astronomers observed a galaxy, nine billion light years away from the Earth, ejecting nearly half of its star-forming gas and losing fuel.
Galaxies begin to ‘die’ when star formation stops inside them or they start losing material that forms stars.
The ID2299 galaxy is currently ejecting material worth about 10,000 suns every year in the form of cold gas ejection. It is estimated that the galaxy is currently removing 46 per cent of the total cold gas it contains. ....

Astronomers may have just witnessed a new way for galaxies to “die”, using the super-sensitive Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile.
The array of 66 radio telescopes, sprawled across the Atacama Desert about 1400 km north of Chile’s capital Santiago, watched as a galaxy nine billion light-years away ejected nearly half of its star-forming gas into space. ....

Galaxies begin to die when they stop forming stars, but until now astronomers had never clearly glimpsed the start of this process in a far-away galaxy. Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), in which the European Southern Observatory (ESO) is a partner, astronomers have seen a galaxy ejecting nearly half of its star-forming gas. This ejection is happening at a startling rate, equivalent to 10 000 Suns-worth of gas a year the galaxy is rapidly losing its fuel to make new stars. The team believes that this spectacular event was triggered by a collision with another galaxy, which could lead astronomers to rethink how galaxies stop bringing new stars to life. ....
