Carrie’s Corner: “It’s a dream come true”, says Nederburg cellarmaster Samuel Viljoen
It’s not often that our resident wine expert Carrie Adams is in the company of someone as famous as her latest guest. In Carrie’s Corner is Samuel Viljoen, who has just taken over the reigns as the Nederburg cellar master. – Jarryd Neves
Samuel Viljoen on his position at Nederburg:
It’s been quite a journey and yes – it’s a realisation of a dream. I can still recall when I was at university seeing Razvan [Macici] and Andrea [Freeborough] on the cover of the Winelands magazine and thinking, “wow, now that will be something.” ....

Carrie's Corner: Karen Short, the woman who revolutionised SA catering

In this episode, the doyenne of the South African wine industry Carrie Adams speaks to Adrian Short, the CEO of By Word of Mouth. The catering company was started by Short’s wife, Karen, in 1993 and continues to shine as one of the finest catering (and catering related) companies in South Africa. Adrian joined Carrie’s Corner to talk about the company’s humble beginnings and how Karen pushed the envelope, revolutionising home catering in South Africa. – Jarryd Neves
CEO Adrian Short on the beginnings of By Word of Mouth:
Karen started when she came back from London in 1993. She had always had an obsessive interest in food and all things food related. She came back from London after having worked at a catering company over there. If you remember that time in ’93, the South African market was starting to open up and in ’94, there were the elections. People tend to forget what it was like in those days. I was astonished when I saw the stats released by the SA Wine Industry earlier this week, which showed that box wines had outsold bottled wines in 2020 for the first time.
Box wine? It conjures up thoughts of my student days when it was all we could afford to drink other than a good ol bottle of Tassies. The notion was that it was cheaper than bottled wine because the contents were of inferior quality, but at that stage economics were more important to us and with a 5L box of wine you could start a party. ....

Prof Mohammad Karaan Photo: Antonia van Steyn
His death is a loss not only for Stellenbosch University (SU), the South African agricultural sector and Maties rugby, but society generally.
This is how the passing of Prof Mohammad Karaan (52), a former Dean of the Faculty of AgriSciences, who also served as acting Vice-Rector: Community Interaction and Personnel at one point, is described by many who knew him.
At the time of his death on 13 January 2021, he was professor of Agricultural Economics at SU and President of the Maties Rugby Club.
“It’s really shocking to hear of Professor Karaan’s untimely death,” SU Rector and Vice-Chancellor Prof Wim de Villiers said. “He was a particularly valued and beloved colleague who made his mark – at SU, but also nationally and internationally.” ....
