Along Canadian coastlines and waterfronts, increased erosion, storm surge and rising seas are putting more homes at risk of flooding. However, an East Coast researcher has found many people oppose flood-risk mapping because they fear their real estate will be devalued.
Set to come into effect in the next few years, the program would mean even people living in high-risk areas or who experience storm surges would be able to access affordable insurance through the plan.
Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault is not discounting the idea of encouraging communities to move preventatively in the wake of increasing climate-change related disasters.
