Ministry drawing up 1,600 water projects
THE government plans to implement 1,527 water projects in rural areas and 114 others in cities and towns to address shortages of the precious liquid all over the country.
Tabling ministerial estimates for the next financial year, the minister, Jumaa Aweso said the plan w includes new projects and expansion of existing sources.
He requested approval of 680.388bn/- for recurrent and development expenditures, listing drilling 516 wells and constructing 33 dams in dry areas among the key projects.
The government intends to strengthen the Community Based Water Supply Organizations (CBWSO) as well as rural and urban water agencies to ensure close follow-up of implementation of projects, he said.

The introduction of non-endemic fish species has left fishermen and researchers worried that this will increase competition in the Lake, further severing populations of the critically endangered Jipe Tilapia.
There is a 50 per cent likelihood that Jipe Tilapia, will become extinct within 20 years.
Steven Omondi does not miss his old fishing days. The 30 year old lives in Nghonji village along the shores of Lake Jipe, a shallow interterritorial lake shared by Kenya and Tanzania in the Taita Taveta and Kilimanjaro regions.
