Index and exchange-traded funds (ETF) based on the S&P BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 indices have been rolled out by several fund houses over the years. But the preference for these two standard indices has shifted in recent times. In the last two years, 31 ETFs and index funds based on other indices were rolled out. A broader market rally that lifted many more stocks in the year 2020, as opposed to the polarized phases in 2018 and 2019, has also nudged investors to look beyond Sensex and Nifty-based passive funds. ....

“Disruption caused due to Covid-19 itself will present many opportunities in areas like technology, pharma and many other areas,” said Rupesh Bhansali, head (distribution), GEPL Capital. He believes the fund is for investors who understand such themes and first-time investors would be better off in plain vanilla diversified equity funds.
Since the fund is thematic, financial planners feel the portfolio will be concentrated. Given high investor interest in disruptors, the valuations of many such companies will be high. The business could take longer to generate profits leading to volatile price movements in the near term. ....
