Disaster averted as rain wreaks havoc


Units of the fire service and civil defence attended Kilcoole seafront last Saturday, as flood waters threatened the homes of residents of the area.
Chief fire officer Aidan Dempsey said that crews used sand bags and pumping to divert the water away from the houses over the railway embankment. As the tide was in, the water was being held back so work continued until the tide changed.
A local person with a digger also assisted with permission from Birdwatch Ireland and Irish Rail, according to Mr Dempsey.
Kilcoole man Stephen Donnelly, who has lived in the area for decades, said that there was worry among residents from around 1.30 p.m. ....
