Westfield State University’s plans for the fall include restoration of on-ground classes to their traditional level.
In addition to declaring its intent that 75% of its classes be in person, the university is expecting to house more than 2,000 students on campus.
The increasing availability and administration of the COVID-19 vaccine was deemed a key element to the decision that was announced in a university statement. On Tuesday, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker predicted that by June, all Massachusetts residents who wanted a vaccine would have available means to receive it. ....

When Roy H. Saigo arrived as Westfield State University’s interim president in 2020, he described one of his priorities as fostering a greater culture of racial justice, awareness and equity.
Saigo was uniquely equipped for the task. His own memories took him back to the early 1940s, when he and his family were held in Japanese-American internment camps during World War II. ....

A search committee has narrowed the field to five finalists, the university announced Monday. They are:
Kristin Esterberg, president of the State University of New York College at Potsdam.
Darrell Kruger, professor of geography and former provost of Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C.
Robert Pignatello, senior adviser to the chancellor of the Pennsylvania System of Higher Education and former president of Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania.
Dione Somerville, executive vice president of Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, Iowa.
Linda Thompson, Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Science at the University of Massachusetts Boston. ....

It is the largest private donation in Westfield State’s 181-year history.
The gift will support two restricted funds: $1 million to endow the Last Mile Fund and $1 million to establish the Paul W. Dower Live Strong Scholarship Fund, the university said.
Established in 2018, the Last Mile Fund helps students in need who are at that critical “last mile” on their path to graduation but need money. ....
