10,000 displaced people seek refuge in evacuation centers as floods destroy families in Timor-Leste - Timor-Leste


DILI April 08, 2021 Humanitarian workers continued rescue missions Wednesday in remote locations in Timor-Leste using excavators and cranes, as death toll from recent flash floods reached 42, even as many are still reported missing by local authorities.
Families relied on the generosity of their neighbours to seek temporary shelter in the few houses left standing after the devastating floods and landslides that affected an estimated 10,000 people in the island nation.
Impassable roads and power black-outs that engulfed the country hindered relief efforts.
Anna Dosantos Lucia, a 39-year-old mother of seven from Lemonara in Dili, currently hosted at Balide catholic parish hall – one of the 19 evacuation centers set-up by the Government of Timor-Leste to help those affected by the floods had to wait more than three days to get help from authorities. ....

UNFPA provide essential services to flood victims: Worst floods in 40 years leave 32 people dead and over 10,000 homeless in Timor-Leste - Timor-Leste


DILI, 06 April 2021 Heavy rains in Timor-Leste over the weekend left 32 people dead, over 10,000 people homeless and countless missing.
According to Timor-Leste deputy prime minister José Reis, this is the worst floods the country has experienced in 40 years.
The floods left the presidential palace water-logged, most roads in Dili inaccessible, and power supply cut off.
Speaking during the daily briefing, Director General, National Directorate of the Civil Protection, Mr Ismail Babo noted that out of the total 2,065 households that were affected by floods, over 70% of the victims (1,579 households) are from Dili.
“As of today, 2,065 households have been affected with the floods and are currently in 11 evacuation centres that we have established in Dili to help those in need of emergency supplies. ....

United Nations agencies in Timor-Leste are supporting response efforts, as floods and landslides left widespread damage across the country, including in the capital, Dili.
According to media reports, at least 21 people died in the country and many more are missing. Large parts of Dili are inundated, with water levels as high as two meters reported in some neighbourhoods.
Severe damage has also been reported to critical infrastructure, including roads, bridges and medical centres. Communication networks and electricity are said to be disrupted in some of the worst affected areas. ....
