PARMA, Ohio – President Warren G. Harding was inaugurated as the nation’s 29th president on March 4, 1921. Just a few days later, on March 10, Sue Peterchalk was born to Eastern European immigrant parents in Portage, Pennsylvania.
Peterchalk, now a Parma resident, is the city’s newest centenarian. She received a proclamation recently from Parma City Council President Sean Brennan. Ward 9 Councilman Roy Jech also signed the proclamation. ....

PARMA, Ohio It’s an election year in Parma with the May 4 primary including several Republican candidates vying for seats in the largely Democrat community.
While the filing date for both party candidates was earlier this month, independent residents have until May 3 to file with the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.
That means the following races may have additional faces by the Nov. 2 general election.
Council President Sean Brennan (D) is facing a challenge from Peter M. Krafcik (R). In Ward 1, four-term Councilman Vito Dipierro is not seeking reelection with Monica Wilson (D) now running unopposed for the seat. ....

PARMA, Ohio Decades after Funk’s Food City closed, the intersection of State and Grantwood roads will once again boast a grocery store.
This week, it was announced that Discount Drug Mart was the winning bidder at $725,000 to purchase the former State Road Elementary School site from the Parma City Schools.
“We’re excited to join the Parma community,” said Discount Drug Mart Government Affairs Director Steve Ferris, who expects the new store to open in 2022. “We’ve wanted to build a store there for many years. We believe this is a perfect location.” ....

Parma City Council Asks Residents to Keep Holiday Lights Glowing

(Cleveland – OH) Parma City Council passed a resolution Dec. 30, Wednesday evening encouraging residents to keep their holiday lights glowing until the end of February in a show of support for health-care workers and first responders.
Spearheaded by Ward 9 Councilman Roy Jech, council members hope to see the holiday spirit continue during the cold and challenging months ahead.

At a time when people are encouraged to stay distant from others, Christmas lights and decorations can create a sense of community among neighbors and friends, as well as help bolster people’s moods, Jech said. He added, Parma residents have always risen to the occasion with exceptional decorations and Christmas displays, so why not continue to display them. ....
