Weather but he should be on the ground for us later in the show. for more on the situation on the ground, i m joined on the phone by dan halliburton, a volunteer with the red cross in texas. you re there in rowlet just outside of a dallas shelter. first of all, describe what you re seeing and how bad the area is where that storm touched down. first and foremost today is a miserably cold day. we have had nothing but steady, cold rain all day long, sometimes very, very heavy downpours, mixed in with lightning and thunder. and you can imagine the problem that that creates for everyone who s part of this recovery effort. the debris and damage we ve seen is as bad as any major tornado that i ve seen, and i ve seen a number of them. and the neighborhoods are very, very hard hit. our shelter here in rowlett is open. we have several open in the ....
Snowstorm accompanied with plunging temperatures is expecting to bring up to 16 inches of snow to the region. and then take a look at this from rowlett, texas. a large tornado moving through the area overnight. that s lit up by what you re seeing these numerous power flashes as power lines are destroyed. that s where we find our nbc charles hadlock. how bad is it out there? reporter: it s really bad, alex. the tornado that came through came through at night. so this is the first chance anyone has been able to see what actually happened. you see the aerial, how wide the path of destruction has been. some houses have been leveled, completely wiped away from their foundation. this is a house that s still standing but all the windows are blown out. you can see some of the toys the kids got perhaps in this neighborhood scattered in this yard. this is one of 11 tornadoes that struck texas overnight killing ....
Dozen. i can tell you that the tornado in garland was a category 4. the one in rowlett was a category 3. and so these are significant powerful days that were capable of inflicting massive damage. can you just touch on whenever something hike this happens, a disaster, families affected, how specifically the state helps out just moving forward within the next couple weeks, days? well, the state is helping out through a variety of different agencies. depending on the particular region. for example, in the snowy parts of the panhandle, that is an area where the texas national guard and the state guard are particularly effective with the equipment they provide to assist those who have vehicles or other property that typically cannot ....
General path of the tornado did hit. huge amounts of damage, so we will be out there in the field this morning. let s get an update from on the ground right now, charles hadlock is live in rowlett, texas, damaged or hit by the tornadoes. he has the latest on the aftermath. reporter: good morning, eamon. parts of texas are waking up to a cold, wet mess this morning. as many as 11 tornadoes struck the state overnight, killing as many as 11 people. oh! there s stuff flying in the air. a path of destruction near dallas as deadly tornadoes touched down, terrorizing residents for hours. five people were killed in garland, texas, when the fierce winds swept their cars right off i-30. it appears at this point that they probably came from the roadway, from the highway, around 17 feet. eyewitnesses came upon a scene of devastation. it was terrifying. it was heartbreaking. ....
Dozens more are injured. all of this as massive floods continue to threaten parts of texas, oklahoma and missouri. msnbc meteorologist is following the weather pattern. charles hadlock standing by for us in rowlett, texas. let s go to you charles first. do we know how many twisters hit that area? reporter: national weather service sent out a team beginning at 8:00 today. on radar last night they counted 11 tornadoes. of course that was in an area across about five different counties. the largest tornado appears to be the one that came right through here, alex. this is the stiff rowlett, garland is just to the west. rockwall is just to the east. they estimate that the winds here were between 135 and 165 miles per hour. that s an ef-3 tornado on the enhanced fujita scale. ....
