Hadrian's Wall Rotary launch Rotary Food Voucher Scheme with West Northumberland Food Bank

HADRIAN’S Wall Rotary has allocated £2,500 to launch and run a Rotary Food Voucher Scheme with West Northumberland Food Bank.
The scheme has two main aims; to help people who are struggling and in need due to circumstances beyond their control, such as Covid-19 and the effects of Brexit, and to benefit small, local shops struggling to survive in these difficult times.
The food voucher will give recipients the dignity to choose their own produce and the ability to buy fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, eggs, and meat, while putting money into local businesses to help them to recover and build back. ....

Red phone box in Durham becomes real life saver with new defibrillator

A DECOMMISSIONED red phone box on Durham’s Palace Green is the site of the city’s latest life-saving defibrillator.
Three Durham Rotary Clubs, Durham Bede, Durham and Durham Elvet, secured permission from Durham University to install the equipment in the high-profile location at the centre of the Durham World Heritage Site.
Community defibrillators are part of an extended regional project being run by Rotary North East, which stretches from the Scottish borders to the North Yorkshire border.
Barbara Broadbelt, Rotary North East district governor, said: “One of the areas of focus for Rotary is disease prevention and treatment and this defibrillator initiative is a commitment to improve the lives of everyone in our local communities. ....

Darlington's Mayor teams up with world's oldest Burns club to raise money for charities

THE MAYOR of a North-East town is teaming up with the world’s oldest Burns club to stage a fundraising event in honour of Scotland’s famous national poet.
Darlington’s Mayor, Councillor Chris McEwan, was born in Greenock, on the Scottish coast, on Christmas Day, in 1965, and although he left the town when he was only six-weeks-old, he has always retained an affinity with the town.
Now Councillor McEwan has forged an innovative link with Greenock Burns Club – known as The Mother Club – to raise money for charities close to his heart.
He will be staging a virtual Burns Supper event on Saturday, January 23, with speeches, poems, singing, and the piping in of the haggis, all being relayed by Zoom from Greenock 200 miles away. ....
