Mental Health Awareness Week: School pupils join forces in mental health bid

A MENTAL health support system for Glasgow’s young people has already helped save one life.
And now a roll out of the Togetherall scheme will include everyone in the city aged up to 24 as part of a focus on making Glasgow a nurturing city.
Barry Syme, City Principal Psychologist, said work in schools in crucial to give pupils supports to help prevent problems escalating.
Last year Glasgow became the first education department to invest in Togetherall, an online platform giving mental health support to 16 to 18-year-olds. ....

£700k benefits claimed by Glasgow parents thanks to anti-poverty initiative

PARENTS in Glasgow have accessed more than £700,000 in unclaimed benefits thanks to an anti-poverty project.
Four schools took part in an initial trial working with a financial inclusion support officer (FISO) to help parents navigate the welfare system.
Now the scheme is to be rolled out to all 30 city secondary, an ASL school and two primaries following its success.
Gena Howe, child poverty manager at Glasgow City Council, said the project came about after a series of encounters demonstrated that parents and carers needed support accessing entitlements.
She had been at a meeting of the Calton Child Poverty Network where parents told her of difficulties with understanding and claiming benefits. ....

Teachers face 'derogatory sexualised' language and threats from pupils


Teachers are facing derogatory sexualised language and threats from out-of-control pupils in the classroom, a union conference has heard.
There has been a deterioration in pupil behaviour in recent years as many teachers struggle alone with extreme cases, the NASUWT union s annual conference was told. 
A survey of more than 4,700 union members suggests 38 per cent have been subjected to verbal abuse from students in the past year, while 10 per cent have received threats of physical violence from pupils during the same period.
The poll found that six per cent of teachers have been subjected to physical violence by pupils in the last year. ....
