Celebrity chef George Calombaris' offloads Melbourne house for $9.5m

The home in McMaster Court was first offered for sale off-market in February last year, amid reports that the hospitality empire Calombaris founded, MAdE Establishment, was set to be placed into voluntary administration. The collapse later forced the closure of 12 venues including fast casual souvlaki stores Jimmy Grants and three of the Hellenic Republic restaurants.

The group in 2019 faced an underpayment scandal where it back paid AU$7.83 million (NZ$8.4 million) in wages and superannuation to 515 current and former employees.
These staff were not paid at the correct classification, worked hours that were not adequately compensated by annualised salaries, and were affected by the incorrect application of the award, an enforceable undertaking between the Fair Work Ombudsman and the restaurant group found. ....

Ross Savas from Kay & Burton was the agent who sold the property, and declined to comment.
The mansion was placed on the market in 2020, two weeks after George sold his four-bedroom Safety Beach holiday house for $1.01million.
Details: George and his wife purchased the five-bedroom Toorak property for $4.75million, and listed it for sale in February 2020 as George s hospitality empire teetered on the brink of collapse
