The story behind free books sent to kids in 1924 from Illinois Miner newspaper

John Dunphy’s recent discovery of a well-worn book given to the children of miners in 1924 drew my attention. The book’s inside message from the editor of the Illinois miners’ newspaper led Dunphy to guess, in a piece published Dec. 13 in the Post-Dispatch, that the book may have been sent as a reward to those who sold Illinois Miner subscriptions. The real story is even better.
This artifact sends us a message from the past, one that reaches beyond coal mines that have long since closed and compels us to question clichés about miner communities. Most were and are depicted as backward, with families looking no further than the limits of the mining camps. ....
